Why use frame layouts?

Frame based layouts are used where there is an element of the web page that will always remain visible. The other frames will change according to the topic. All frames can be made to scroll.

These layouts are commonly used by organizations where the site has a number of sections and where the corporate logo and main menu are required to be always visible.

There are a great variety of different page layouts that can be used.

  • Most sites use a navigation frame on the left side of the page. This may or may not scroll.

  • A common technique is to overlay the main content frame with tables/cells to give a more flexible layout. See Dartmoor National Park site.
